About the event
This workshop is tailored for parents of children in Years 5–6, focusing on how to support and engage older readers as they prepare for secondary school and beyond. At this stage, reading plays a critical role in developing vocabulary, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of texts.
During the presentation, we will:
Outline how reading is approached in Years 5–6, including the focus on comprehension, critical analysis, and exposure to more challenging texts.
Explore strategies to encourage reading for pleasure while supporting the development of advanced skills such as inference, evaluation, and discussion.
Highlight how reading supports other areas of the curriculum, including writing, vocabulary development, and problem-solving.
Provide practical tips for engaging readers at home, such as exploring nonfiction, discussing books, and introducing age-appropriate classics and contemporary novels.
Share ways to prepare children for the transition to secondary school, where reading becomes integral to all subjects.
This session will help parents foster a deeper appreciation of reading in their children, supporting them to become confident, curious, and independent readers.
