Beyond Hong Kong

Group Size

Overview

Taking place in North Taiwan, Taipei is a regional hub shaped by Indigenous, mainland Chinese, Japanese, and global influences. Taipei offers students a broad introduction to Taiwan’s historical and contemporary identity. This programme is designed to introduce students to Taiwan through immersive city exploration, cultural landmarks, and practical language engagement.

The scope emphasises experiential learning, including navigating public transportation, interacting with vendors, completing scavenger hunts, and engaging in small-group challenges at key sites. A highlight of the itinerary includes a social enterprise-focused service-learning opportunity with Xiong Mi Wu, a day trip to Jiufen and visits to iconic institutions such as the National Palace Museum and Taipei 101. The programme prioritises lived cultural experience and urban exploration.

Highlights

Students will explore historic neighbourhoods such as Dihua Street and Longshan Temple, gaining insight into Taipei’s religious life and merchant heritage.

A day trip to Jiufen, including the Jiufen Gold Museum, provides historical context on Taiwan’s gold-mining era and Japanese influence.

Students will also collaborate with Xiong Mi Wu, a social enterprise supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities, offering exposure to Taiwan’s community-based innovation.

Additional experiences include hiking Elephant Mountain, visiting Beitou’s hot spring district, and ascending Taipei 101 for panoramic urban views.
